General Description

The Sections Accounting Manager serves as the financial liaison for 47 State Bar sections, collectively managing approximately $4 million in annual revenues. This position oversees all financial transactions, prepares monthly financial reports, and ensures compliance with accounting standards. The manager supervises the Sections Accountant and maintains regular communication with section governance, which may change annually, to provide timely updates on financial activities. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule of remote work and in office at the discretion of employer. 

Primary Functions

  1. Manages accounting services for 47 State Bar sections, including oversight of internal controls and organization of bookkeeping services for several stand-alone sections.
  2.  Administers the disbursement and receipt of funds while adhering to established internal control procedures.
  3. Ensures the timely processing of payments and reimbursements in alignment with deadlines, maintaining regular communication with section treasurers and providing status updates as needed.
  4. Serves as a point of contact for stakeholders, providing consistent updates to management and coordinating effectively with other departments.
  5. Oversees the annual budgeting process, ensuring budgets developed by section councils are received, reviewed, and accurately recorded.
  6. Reviews monthly variance reports to ensure financial reporting complies with governmental accounting standards and remains consistent and accurate.
  7. Reconciles over 60 bank and investment accounts promptly to ensure financial accuracy.
  8. Acts as a liaison between Section treasurers and the State Bar’s banking partners, coordinating annual signature card updates and other account changes.
  9. Reviews and distributes invoices and statements to Sections for payments made on their behalf, following up on approvals as necessary.
  10. Coordinates and distributes quarterly Section dues collected by the Membership Department.
  11. Ensures accurate processing of 1099 forms by collecting necessary information and submitting it to Accounts Payable.
  12. Prepares audit workpapers and produce audit-ready financial reports on an annual basis.
  13. Supervises the Sections Accountant, delegate assignments, and provide guidance as needed.
  14. Delivers quarterly presentations and address financial-related topics during up to four meetings with Section members annually.
  15. Develops and maintains user guides and procedures to support Section Treasurers in their duties.
  16. Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.

Position Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a minimum of five years of accounting experience, including financial reporting or accounts payable, is required. A minimum of two years of customer service experience is required. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate staff effectively while meeting deadlines is required. Strong organizational skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Must have the ability to reliably complete tasks under deadline pressure. Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel is preferred. Familiarity with governmental accounting principles, including modified accrual, is preferred. Experience with Great Plains accounting software or similar accounting systems is desired.
