General Description

The Senior Accountant for the Texas Access to Justice Foundation performs a broad range of professional accounting functions, including maintaining financial records, preparing and analyzing financial reports, and supporting compliance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies.  Working with a high degree of independence, the position applies sound judgment and analysis to provide accuracy of financial information.  The role provides guidance and oversight to accounting staff through work review, knowledge sharing, and process improvement.

This position is responsible for managing key accounting processes, preparing GAAP and GASB compliant financial statements, supporting grant and fund accounting activities, conducting grantee reviews and analyzing financial results. Success is reflected in strong internal controls, accurate financial reporting, and responsible stewardship of financial resources.

Primary Functions

  1. Accounting & Financial Operations
  • Analyze, prepare, review, and record financial transactions to ensure accuracy, proper coding, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB)
  • Manage the monthly close process, including preparation of journal entries, accruals, and deferrals
  • Maintain and reconcile the general ledger and sub-ledgers, ensuring completeness and accuracy
  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Prepare and maintain supporting schedules, including trial balance and workpapers
  1. Fund & Grant Accounting
  • Maintain and track restricted, unrestricted, and program-specific funds
  • Record and monitor grant revenues and expenses by individual program
  • Prepare grant payment requests and support disbursement processing
  • Assist with time tracking and cost allocation for grant reimbursement purposes
  1. Investment & Technical Accounting
  • Account for investment activity, including interest income, fair value adjustments, and amortization
  • Manage lease accounting, including right-of-use assets and related liabilities
  • Prepare and record journal entries and ensure proper documentation
  1. Grantee Financial Review & Compliance
  • Conduct 10-15 annual financial desk reviews of grantees
  • Assess compliance with grant requirements, policies, and applicable regulations
  • Review financial records, internal controls, audit reports, and supporting documentation
  • Identify, document, and communicate findings and recommendations
  1. Cash Management
  • Oversee all accounts payable and receivable functions, including invoice processing, collections, and disbursements
  • Manage cash receipts, bank transactions, and reconciliations
  • Ensure timely and accurate recording of all transactions in the appropriate accounting period

 

  1. Process Improvement & Support
  • Provide guidance and review the work of junior accounting staff to ensure accuracy and adherence to established procedures and accounting standards
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting processes
  • Support audit preparation and external reporting requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accounting
  • Experience managing full-cycle accounting responsibilities independently
  • Proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred

  • Experience with nonprofit, fund, or grant accounting
  • Familiarity with investment accounting and lease accounting standards
  • CPA certification or progress toward certification
  • Experience conducting financial reviews, audits, or compliance assessments
  • Prior experience in a small team or single-accounting environment
